Features

Designed to satisfy 4K production requirements, theSony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS Lensis a wide-ranging zoom lens that covers wide-angle to telephoto perspectives while adding many features for your full-frame, APS-C, or E-mount camcorder or still photography camera system. The lens features a powered zoom control with a variable speed and zoom rotation direction reversal capability. Powering the zoom function is an SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive that allows precision and quiet operation. Focus noise is also minimized through weight reduction of the focus element group and use of a linear motor. Iris function is also designed to be smooth and silent for cinematography demands.

Angle of view variations while focusing (breathing) and axial displacement while zooming have been reduced while five aspherical elements and three ED elements work with advanced multi-coating technology to minimize distortion and chromatic aberrations while also contributing to sharper overall imagery with enhanced contrast and clarity.

Independent control rings for zoom, focus, and iris (aperture) are provided for and the focus mode can be switched from auto to manual by sliding the focus ring forward so control is maintained at all times. All three control rings have been engineered to provide the right amount of torque for comfortable, responsive operation and the pitch of the scalloping on the rings has been designed for comfortable, slip-free control.

A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and is especially beneficial when working with greater zoom magnifications in low-light conditions. Also benefiting working in dim light or at the long end of the zoom range is Optical SteadyShot image stabilization, which works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps.

Powered 8-speed zoom provides a 28-135mm focal length range, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives
Power zoom designed for cinema productions and full frame cameras
Features Sony's original Nano AR Coating technology designed to effectively suppress reflections that can cause flare and ghosting. The precisely defined regular nano-structure allows accurate light transmission, contributing to high-quality images, even more so than lenses with coatings that use an irregular nano-structure
Three control rings (for zoom, focus, iris) offer manual control for demanding large format productions. The focus mode can be switched from auto to manual simply by sliding the focus ring forward so control is maintained at all times. Zoom speed can be precisely controlled over a wide range, with zoom rotation direction reversal capability. All three control rings have been engineered to provide ideal torque for comfortable, responsive operation. Even the pitch of the scalloping on the rings has been designed for comfortable, slip-free control
Sony's advanced iris control and linear AF motor drive system achieve quiet focusing that is also extremely responsive. Part of the reason that focus control is so quiet is that original Sony linear motors are contactless, with no gears or mechanical coupling to generate noise
The world's first SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) drive in a cinema lens for quiet zoom and smooth iris control
Maintains plane of focus while zooming and maintains field of view while focusing (important for video)
Delivers smooth tracking throughout the zoom range at any speed and eliminates any axial image shifting. Zooming is quiet as well as responsive thanks to advanced mechanical actuator design
Features an optical design and control technology inherited from Sony's professional camcorders that ensure no breathing while focusing
Constant f/4 maximum aperture enables greater consistency throughout the zoom range and benefits working in dim conditions with longer focal lengths
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed steps to benefit shooting handheld in dim lighting and with greater zoom magnifications
Three extra-low dispersion elements and five aspherical elements helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range while also contributing to overall image sharpness and clarity

The Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS is a new professional-grade E-mount lens designed with an emphasis on videography rather than stills""Its compatible with Sony E-mount full frame and APS-C cameras, but is best suited to high-end interchangeable lenscameras like the PXW-FS7.

The lens features a constant f/4 aperture throughout its focal range, but its most notable feature is an internal powered zoom system which provides extremely smooth and quiet motorized zooming thats vital for smooth movie making.

Other features include Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation, a nine-blade rounded diaphragm and a 40-95cm minimum focussing distance (wide-telephoto). The lens is dust and moisture resistant and a tripod collar is included. Expect to pay in the region of 2379/$2498.

Ease of Use

Sony markets the FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS as compact and lightweight, and in the world of pro videography, that holds true. However, with its huge 95mm filter diameter and considerable 1.22kg weight, this isnt a particularly travel-friendly lens for shooting stills on a svelte Alpha 7-series body. Such a large filter diameter also necessitates the use of a 100mm+ square or rectangular filters, but this filter format is a sensible choice for covering many full-frame lenses.

The upside of such bulk is stellar build quality and plenty of controls. The Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS lens features separate focus, zoom and aperture (iris) rings. The latter has 1/3ev stops ranging from f/4 to f/22 and can be switched between smooth and notched rotation, or locked to an aperture of your choice to prevent accidental movement. The front ring controls focussing and has a deeply-ridged rubberised surface that provides great grip in all weathers. You simply slide the focussing ring backward to engage manual focus.

The zoom ring sits in the middle of the aperture and focussing rings and rotates through approximately 90 degrees. A small knob is screwed to the ring for easier focal length adjustment. Although the zoom ring appears to operate the lens elements directly as youd expect from a typical DSLR zoom lens, it doesnt here. Instead the ring simply actuates the internal focussing motor, but its not the most direct or immediate system. Yank the ring from maximum wide angle to full telephoto and theres slight lag whilst the motor catches up, and the lens will still be zooming for a second or so after the ring reaches its telephoto hard stop. This make snap zooming rather sluggish, but given the lens is targeted at video recording, slow and smooth zooming is the priority.

A switch on the left of the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS lens barrel changes the zoom control from the manual ring to a rocker lever for full power zooming. Push the lever up to zoom in and down to zoom out. Its a control system much as youd find on the lens barrel of many superzoom bridge cameras and works very well here, providing steady and completely silent zooming thats perfect for video work.

The final switch activates Sonys Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation system, and behind all the switches is the mounting point for the tripod collar. This is easily removable for handheld shooting, but is vital when shooting from a tripod, especially when using a relatively lightweight camera like an Alpha 7.

In addition the smooth powered zoom, a key feature that makes the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS particularly appealing to videographers is its ability to provide an attractively shallow depth of field from its relatively wide constant f/4 maximum aperture. The quality of background bokeh blur is further enhanced by the use of a rounded 9-blade diaphragm. Foreground subjects should be especially sharp thanks to five aspherical lens elements and an additional three extra-low dispersion elements.

Focal Range

The Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS lens 28-135mm focal length gives an angle of view of 75-18 degrees on a 35mm full-frame sensor. An APS-C sensor changes the perceived focal length to 42-202mm and the angle of view is consequently restricted to 54-12 degrees.

Focusing

The Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS focusses quickly and accurately. Focussing is completely internal, so the 95mm filter thread does not rotate. The wide focus ring does not have hard stops.

The internal SuperSonic Motor is barely audible if you literally rest your ear on the lens in a quiet room, but to all intents and purposes, its silent.

Focussing in good light is almost instant, though can be slower in dimmer conditions where focus hunting is an occasional issue. However, our testing used an A7R body which isnt renowned for being the fastest-focussing camera in the Alpha 7 series.

Chromatic Aberrations

Chromatic aberration (purple fringing) is rarely an issue with the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS. We could only find a couple of instances of fringing in our test shots, and youll need to be pixel-peeping at 100% image size to spot it.

Light Fall-off

As the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS doesnt boast an especially wide maximum aperture, light fall-off is almost non-existent, even when shooting wide-open at 28mm using a full-frame camera.

"Sony

Macro

The Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS isnt intended for close-up shots, but a 40cm minimum focus distance at wide angle does make it fairly useful for shooting reasonably close subjects. This image is uncropped and shows how close you can get to a Compact Flash card.

Bokeh

With a constant f/4 maximum aperture, the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS is capable of throwing backgrounds out of focus, especially when shooting at longer focal lengths. The resulting bokeh blur is fairly smooth thanks to a nine-blade rounded diaphragm, which provides smoother blurring than seven or five-blade designs. Bokeh is however a fairly subjective part of a lens image quality, so check out these 100% crops to see the FE PZ 28-135mm F4 G OSS bokeh quality for yourself.
