Features

The PowerLite 580 XGA 3LCD Ultra-Short-Throw Projector from Epson is designed for use in classroom settings, and is an ideal companion for digital whiteboards and document cameras. It outputs 3200 lumens and features a 1024 x 768 (XGA) native resolution and a 4:3 native aspect ratio - through letterboxing and scaling can accept a range of other input resolutions up to 1600 x 900 (WXGA++), though loss of quality may result. Falling into the ultra-short-throw category, the PowerLite 580 features a throw ratio of 0.3 to 0.4:1 (digital zoom only) - this means, for example, at 12" from the screen or whiteboard it can throw a 93" diagonal image.

The projector features a number of inputs for the greatest flexibly. There is a VGA input paired with a mirrored VGA loop-out for computers with analog graphics cards and analog document cameras. Two HDMI inputs are provided for newer computers, Blu-ray players, and other HDTV-compatible equipment. And there is a Composite and S-Video input for use with standard definition analog devices such as VCRs and camcorders. A USB type A port allows the projector to show "PC-less" presentations from a USB storage device and is compatible with many document cameras that have USB output. A USB type B port allows the projector to be connected to a computer, as an alternative to using VGA or HDMI - using USB may impact the quality of video because of bandwidth limitations.

The projector can be controlled directly from surface buttons. However, since it will typically be wall or ceiling mounted, an IR remote is included which can be picked up from the back or front of the projector. For remote operation, even from another location, there is an Ethernet port and an RS-232 serial port. With Ethernet the projector can be accessed through a Web browser, and it is possible to stream presentations to it using the iProjection App or use the Multi-PC Collaboration feature. RS-232, meanwhile, allows it to be controlled from automaton systems such as Crestron RoomView.

3LCD Technology

A beamsplitting prism sends red, blue, and green light through three monochrome LCD displays to render a video image. 3LCD design features no moving parts in the imaging system, although there is still a cooling fan, and is free of the "rainbow effect" artifact sometimes perceived on color wheel-based systems.

3200 Lumens Lamp

A single lamp provides 3200 lumens brightness in normal mode, and is estimated to last 4000 hours - up to 6000 hours in the less bright ECO mode. To determine the ideal brightness level for your application, you will need to take into account the screen width, distance from the projector to the screen (throw distance), amount of ambient light near the screen, and the reflectivity (gain) of the screen surface used.

3200 Lumens Color Brightness

This projector features both 3200 lumens white brightness and 3200 lumens color brightness. Some projectors only specify the white brightness in their lumens ratings. In many cases color portions of the image will be less bight than comparable gray scales. On this projector you can be sure both colors and gray scales are rendered in equal brightness.

1024 x 768 (XGA) Native Resolution

This projector features a 1024 x 768 (XGA) native resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio optimal for PowerPoint presentations and many still images. The wider 16:9 HDTV format can still be displayed - either by cropping (letterboxing) the image or applying an anamorphic squeeze, which distorts the picture.

Optimized for Wall Mounting

Thanks to the ultra-short-throw design, it is possible to render a 93" diagonal image with the projector mounted 12" away from the screen. By wall mounting at such a close distance the risk of shadow interference is greatly reduced. A wall mount is included.

USB Connectivity

This projector features two USB ports, a USB type A female and a USB type B female. From these ports you can:

USB Type A Female (USB-A):
  • Give a PC-less presentation from a FAT/FAT32-formatted USB storage device, digital camera or smartphone. Supported file extensions are: .jpg (up to 8192 x 8192), .bmp (up to 1280 x 800), .png (up to 1280 x 800); <video/animated> .gif (1280 x 800), .avi (up to 1280 x 720)
  • Connect a document camera with USB (not all models supported)

USB Type B Female (USB-B):
  • Connect the projector to a Windows or OS X computer to display audio and video (requires driver software installation; high-frame rate video may not be supported)
  • Pass through data from device connected to USB-A port - such as a document camera - to the computer

Moderator Function

Multi-PC projection and Moderator function allows up to 50 devices to connect over a network and then select up to four to project simultaneously.

Epson iProjection App Compatible

Wirelessly project from your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Android mobile device. This features requires the projector be connected to a network that has a wireless access point or that you use the Wi-Fi adapter for this projector (ELPAP07), available separately.

Note: Due to bandwidth limitations and latency, video may not playback smoothly if streamed wirelessly to the projector. This feature is recommended for showing PowerPoints, still images, or other presentations that do not require a high frame rate.

Wired and Optional Wireless Networking

An Ethernet port allows you to connect this projector to your local network to control it remotely or stream presentations with the iProjection App. In addition, the projector is compatible with a separately available Wi-Fi dongle (ELPAP07) so that you can connect it wirelessly to your network or stream directly from a mobile device running the iProjection App.

Note: Only use Epson-specified wireless networking adapters. Third-party USB W-Fi adapters are not supported.

Pre-Set Templates for Whiteboard Users

Choose from four pre-set templates or create a custom template to project lines or grids onto whiteboards or chalkboards.

Epson Auto Iris Technology

Adjusts the aperture to provide the optimum contrast and brightness for each scene.

Quick Corner

Allows you to move any of the four corners of an image independently at setup, to adjust each corner for a perfectly rectangular picture.

Built-In Closed Captioning

Allows educational institutions to meet ADA 508 requirements for students with hearing impairments.
